Recognizing the Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease often starts silently, with mild symptoms that can be easy to overlook. However, as it progresses, the signs become more severe. Symptoms include:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums.
- Bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing.
- Persistent bad breath (halitosis).
- Gum recession, making teeth appear longer.
- Loose or shifting teeth.
- Pain or discomfort when chewing.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s essential to seek professional evaluation as soon as possible.
The Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis (Early Stage)
The first stage, known as gingivitis, is characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed when brushing or flossing. At this point, gum disease is still reversible with professional cleanings and improved oral hygiene.
Periodontitis (Moderate Stage)
If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, which is when bacterial infections cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, forming deep pockets. These pockets trap plaque and bacteria, leading to further inflammation, bone loss, and eventual tooth instability.
Severe Periodontitis (Advanced Stage)
In the most advanced stage, severe periodontitis, the supporting structures of the teeth become so weakened that tooth loss is likely. At this point, more intensive treatments are needed to stop the progression and restore oral health.
Treatment Options for Gum Disease
- Prevention
- Non-Surgical
- Laser
- Surgery
- Maintenance

Prevention is key to detecting or stopping serious diseases and health problems before they become major. It has been shown that preventative care can prevent further infections and reduce potential treatment costs and time. We are passionate about empowering you to properly brush, floss, and take better care of your gums and teeth to lead a healthier and longer life.

Also known as scaling and root planing, deep cleaning is often the first line of treatment for fighting gum disease. This process involves removing plaque and hardened bacteria that have accumulated below the gum line and smoothing the tooth surface to protect against the accumulation of additional bacteria.

For advanced periodontal disease, laser gum treatment may be a great option. During this treatment, a very thin laser is used to gently target and destroy bacteria deep inside the gum pockets. This will promote bone and gum tissue regeneration around your roots. There is no cutting or suturing, allowing minimal discomfort and shorter downtime.

Osseous surgery, also known as “surgical cleaning,” may be another treatment option for advanced periodontal disease. This procedure involves eliminating bacteria trapped deep inside the gums, removing diseased gum tissue, and repairing and rebuilding the damaged bone with bone grafting to restore support around teeth.

Once your gum disease has been treated, we closely monitor the health of your gums with cleanings every 3-4 months. This ensures that we reduce the amount of bacteria around your teeth so the gum disease does not return.
The Link Between Gum Disease & Overall Health
Research has shown that gum disease doesn’t just affect your mouth—it can have serious implications for your overall health. Studies have linked periodontal disease to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Inflammation caused by gum disease may contribute to systemic issues, increasing the risk of serious health complications.
Pregnant women with untreated gum disease may also face a higher risk of premature birth and low birth weight. By treating gum disease early, you’re not only protecting your teeth and gums but also taking an important step toward safeguarding your overall health.
Take the First Step Toward Healthier Gums
Gum disease is a progressive condition, but with the right treatment, it can be managed and even reversed. If you’re experiencing symptoms such as bleeding gums, bad breath, or gum recession, don’t wait—early intervention is key to preventing more serious complications.
